JOB SUMMARY:

We are seeking an energetic and dedicated Director of Athletics who is passionate about working with children and willing to support all facets of our expanding Athletic Leagues and gym facilities. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Youth Services, the Director of Athletics will oversee the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley athletic program, including coach management, gym supervision, volunteer recruitment, referee hiring, scheduling, budget preparation, promotion, athlete recruitment, and sponsorship solicitation. The Director will manage athletic activities, coordinate events, and act as a liaison with other sports organizations in Sonoma Valley. This role presents an opportunity to inspire our diverse community of youth, parents, and staff to engage in extracurricular movement activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement all leagues and gym programs with proactive communication online and within the community.
  • Prepare and oversee scheduling for each Athletic League and gym activities.
  • Maintain a well-organized gym environment, ensuring that it is always under control. Allow only actively participating athletes on the court to enhance the overall experience.
  • Process and manage all athletic registrations in partnership with the Membership Manager and or Assistant Athletic Director.
  • Interacts thoughtfully with all parents and members and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  • Work with the Assistant Athletic Director to establish clear goals and performance expectations. These goals should align with the overall objectives of the Athletic Department and the organization as a whole.
  • Provide guidance to the Assistant Athletic Director in overseeing the requirements of the athletic department. This encompasses cultivating a positive and inclusive workplace/gym, addressing conflicts within and beyond the sports arena, and managing the recruitment and upkeep of volunteer applications while ensuring compliance with BGCA/State regulations.
  • Assist and train the Assistant Athletic Director in overseeing day-to-day operations, such as, managing games/practices, ensuring equipment and facilities are well-maintained, managing inventory and supplies, and help develop their communication and management of all volunteer coaches.
  • Coach the Assistant Athletic Director on strategies for enhancing the overall experience for all members, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Conduct training sessions for volunteer coaches, paid referees, and parent education to ensure that all parties know and understand all safety rules, rules of the games, and best practices when conducting practices.
  • Oversee the care of and manage all supplies and equipment for both athletics and gym facilities. Ensure all Club spaces & facilities (including shared sites) are clean, safe, and attractive to Members, families, and partners. Maintain accurate inventory of all program supplies.
  • Completes all administrative tasks in accordance with Organizational deadlines. Duties include, but not limited to bi-weekly timecard maintenance, weekly attendance tracking, volunteer tracking, etc.
  • Partner with marketing to ensure all materials are sent out in a timely manner.
  • Manage monthly and annual budgets for the Athletics and Gym Management Department.
  • Collect, maintain, catalog, and analyze records regarding program implementation, outcomes, and impact.
  • Perform special assignments and assist with projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive interactions with youth, families, and community members.
  • Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and the Boys & Girls Club philosophy.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as athletic leagues can run as late as 9pm.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in program development for ages 5-18, particularly in athletics and recreation.
  • Collaborative and creative thinker with the ability to plan, organize, and manage complex initiatives.
  • Knowledge of multiple sports and their rules, with the ability to teach/monitor coaches, referees, and parents.
  • Understanding of youth development principles and characteristics.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervisors, peers, staff, and the community.
  • Advocacy skills for the Athletics and Gym Management departments with internal and external audiences.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, record-keeping, and reporting.
  • Marketing skills for internal and external audiences.
  • Effective crisis de-escalation skills.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger handle or feel objects, tools or controls; stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities are required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Requires ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, squat, pull/push, grasp up to 4-8 hours per day.
  • Successful completion of DOJ fingerprint clearance, CPR, and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to complete Mandated Reporter training/ Child abuse prevention training.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Minimum of three years in recreation, youth development, or athletics program management.
  • Boys & Girls Club Movement experience
